The root is medium size, flattened about 10 cm in diameter. It is an early variety, it ripens fast. It requires very little maintenance.

The planting is from spring to summer (or in February if are protected from cold) in a partially shaded place. We sow the seeds at 1 cm depth and along rows spaced about 15 cm, so that when the roots grow don't touch themselves. Rows should be spaced about 20 cm. If we sow each two weeks, we will have continuously turnips longer. Turnips are easy to grow with little maintenance, but we have to water enough during droughts and to eliminate the weeds. We reap the turnips before the start of frost.

They ripen in 35-45 days after sowing. Turnip Purple Top Milan, can be harvested at any size but, we usually start to harvest when they have 3-5 cm. Anyway we reap when they are about 10 cm because if we let to grow more, the taste and quality are reduced. To harvest leaves, cut it with a knife, to harvest the root, we'll pull the leaves up. To store, we can peel them, cut and boil about 2 min. Once well drained and dried we can freeze them in plastic bags.

We can eat them raw, as they are very tender, a typical way to serve them is shredded between the leaves of salads. In juices and soups are very tasty. We can cook them as potatoes: fried, in stews, cooked, roasted mashed, etc. Turnip leaves are also edible and have a sweet taste when are young. You can use them raw in salads or cooked like any other vegetable. They are delicious cooked with potatoes, or even in omelettes.

Both roots and leaves are rich in vitamin C, B and fiber, folate and minerals too, with low in carbohydrates. It has antioxidades and cleansing properties, in addition to strengthening the immune system. Facilitating digestive aid digestion and improves liver function. The leaves have lots of calcium, vitamin E and provitamin A.

It is advisable to plant the turnips near cabbage, peas, lettuce, spinach, leeks, beets, tomatoes and cucumbers. But we must keep them away from radish and carrot.
