It is a good remedy for bleeding as it slows blood flow and speeds up the repair of damaged tissue as the leaves contain mucilage, tannins and salicylic acid. An extract made from them has antibacterial properties. They are astringents, demulgents, moderately expectorant, hemostatic and ophthalmic. Internally it is used in the treatment of diarrhea, gastritis, peptic ulcers, hemorrhoids, cystitis, bronchitis, colds, sinusitis, asthma and fevers. Externally it is used in the treatment of skin inflammations, ulcers and cuts; the hot leaves are used as a dressing for external wounds. The seeds are used against parasitic worms.
