The Shiso or Perilla Frutescens is a very common medicinal plant in Asian cuisine. The flavor of the green variety is reminiscent of cinnamon and is more intense than the red shiso variety. In Japan it is used as a spice in a wide variety of dishes, such as sushi and sashimi, or cut into thin strips to dress salads, pasta, meat and fish.
