The Shiso or Perilla Frutescens is a very common medicinal plant in Asian cuisine. The flavor of the red variety is reminiscent of anise and is less intense than that of the green shiso variety. In Japan it is used as a spice in a wide variety of dishes, such as sushi and sashimi, or cut into thin strips to dress salads, pasta, meat and fish.
